Your Country wants YOU!!! Represent your country in your sport. It’s not as hard as you think.

Have you ever dreamt of representing your country in top flight sport? Ever imagined yourself pulling on a national team kit, or squeezing into a flag emblazoned skin suit?

Have you ever considered that this dream might not be as far out of reach as you think?

The age group phenomenon has been a well-established fixture for Triathletes for several years. In the world of long, and middle, distance Triathlon, by placing among the top few positions in your age group at any one of a global series of events, you can earn yourself the right to represent yourself, your club, and even your country, in the World Championships! Better still, these World Championship events are often held in beautiful and breath taking locations, like the Hawaiian Islands, or, this year, the sun kissed city of Nice.

In cycling, there is the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships which will be held in Poznan, Poland, in 2019. In order to qualify, you need to take part in an event which is part of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series. By placing in the top 25% at one of these events, you can earn the opportunity to represent your country. Featuring, nearly 3000 riders, from over 56 different countries; this race gives amateur riders the opportunity to experience the grand scale, and smooth execution, of a World Championships event.

The FINA World Masters Championships, held this year in the city of Gwangju, South Korea, features athletes from right across the world of aquatic sports; including in it’s program swimming, diving, synchro, and even water polo. The competition is open to athletes over the age of 25, and even features a 90 – 94 age category. One British Swimmer, John Harrison, who holds world records in the 100- 104 age category, recently celebrated his 105th birthday!

Qualification can be achieved by taking part in National Masters Qualification competitions, such as  the Swim England Masters National Championships, which will be held between 25 – 27 October 2019 at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield.

A record 414,168 people applied, by ballot, to run the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon . In the 2018 New York City Marathon, the 80 – 89 age group had an astonishing 16 finishers. and recently the World Marathon Majors (the Marathons of Tokyo, London, Boston, Chicago, New York and Berlin) announced a brand new age group world championship event.

The AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championship

The inaugural AbbottWMM  Age Group World Championship race will be held in 2020 as part of the Virgin Money London Marathon.

On the 29th of September 2019, the qualification period will come to a close. Following this, once all of the points have been updated, the highest ranking runners, from each age group, will be invited to the World Championships race.

Please note: In order for athletes to be contacted, and invited to the WMM World Championships, they must first have created a profile on worldmarathonmajors.com.

The AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Rankings comprise a one-year qualifying period, during which, athletes in nine separate age groups can compete in over 50 marathons across the world to earn ranking points. At the end of the qualifying period, the top ranked runners in each age group will be invited to the AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championships. In 2020, this race will be held in England, as part of the Virgin Money London Marathon.

SO, what ever you sport and what ever your age, World Class Competition has never been a more attainable goal.
