Here at Sports Tours International we love the Marathon season and we love seeing thousands of runners compete in Marathon events all over the world. But often there is much more going on around the race than the 26.2 mile centre piece. Many people now travel to Marathon weekends to compete in smaller races just to be a part of the unique atmosphere. This blog will give you an insight into some of the world’s most famous Marathon events and what other races go on around the Marathon weekend for you and your friends and family to enjoy!

The BMW Berlin Marathon is one of the Six Abbott World Marathon Majors and it is the current Marathon world record course. It is notorious for being one of the fastest Marathon courses of all time and although a time of 2:02:57 may be too much to ask, a Marathon PB is certainly achievable for you in Berlin.

The BMW Berlin Marathon has its very own 5k Breakfast Run the day before on Saturday 16th April 2018. The race begins at 9:30am from the Schloss Charlottenburg and finishes at Berlin’s iconic Olympiastadion. Afterwards all runners will have a power-breakfast to revitalize the energy store of their bodies. Known for its fast and flat course, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon attracts some of the world’s best runners, especially as it is one of the Six Abbott World Marathon Majors. The course offers a tour of the ‘Windy City’ as it weaves through 29 diverse neighbourhoods.
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has a 5k race on Saturday 6th October 2018. The 5k race is perfect for those wanting to do some final preparation or for those who are just itching to be part of the race weekend. For more information visit https://www.chicago5k.com/.

The Marine Corps Marathon gives runners a very unique experience. The race combines a sightseeing tour of Washington, D.C with the strong values of honour, team spirit and community that you would naturally associate with the US Marine Corps. You will run past many of the great Washington monuments on the route and feel very humbled by the support of the public and military personnel who are there to cheer you on every step of the way.
The race has a 10k on the same day as the Marathon, this 10k allows those wanting to experience the unique running atmosphere without the full Marathon distance. Details are to be announced soon.

The largest of the Abbott World Marathon Majors had over 51 000 finishers in 2017 and is expected to have even more in 2018. The race allows runners to run through the five boroughs of New York City before finishing in Central Park. This a truly memorable race that will give you an unrivalled running experience.
You can also compete in the Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5k the day before the TCS New York City Marathon. You will zip through the streets of Manhattan, and finish at the Marathon finish line in Central Park without having to run 26.2 miles. Perfect for those who want to enjoy the Marathon festivities throughout New York City without the Marathon distance. Later this summer, we’ll receive guaranteed entries which we’ll offer to all our New York customers. The race that started it all! You can relive history as you run the route of the original Marathon run of the soldier Pheidippides, who in 490 AD ran from Marathon to Athens to bring news of the victory over the Persians at the Battle of Marathon.
There is also the opportunity to run in the 5k and 10k races, which take place the same day as the Marathon. These are perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in the legendary atmosphere of Athens but don’t want to run the full Marathon distance.

Rome Marathon gives you the opportunity to combine athletics and sightseeing in Italy’s capital, a city bursting in culture and history. Rome offers an array of historical buildings for you to explore, from ancient ruins such as the Roman Forum to the iconic Colosseum. Run in the footsteps of history, as you take on a Marathon route through this ancient city.
On the 6th April 2019, you can participate in the 4k fun run with 80, 000 other runners. This is a non-competitive race that welcomes all ages and abilities, even pets can run and enjoy the atmosphere of Rome. The price for this race is 10 euros, including a t-shirt. The Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris is perfect for runners who want to combine a short break in a beautiful city and want to run on a flat and fast route that allows them to push for a new PB. The route provides a fantastic sightseeing tour of Paris, initially starting on the Champs Elysees then bypassing iconic sites such as Notre Dame Cathedral, the Bastille and the Eiffel Tower before finishing with a breathtaking view of the Arc de Triomphe.
You can enjoy the 5k Breakfast Run on 13th April 2019 the day before the Marathon. The Breakfast Run is on closed roads and isn’t timed, it provides a perfect last minute warm up for those running the Marathon the day after and it also provides those who aren’t running the opportunity to see some of the iconic landmarks that make Paris so famous.

This is the world’s oldest annual Marathon and is one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors in 2019. The Boston Marathon provides a very fast route giving runners a great chance at getting a PB. The ballot entry system for this race is one of the hardest to gain entry for as thousands want to tick the race of the list and become a step closer to achieving a Six Star Finishers medal.
There is a 5k on Saturday 13th April 2019, two days prior to the Marathon. The 5k race gives you a whistle stop tour through the centre of Boston and provides you with an opportunity to have a final warm up in preparation for the Patriots Day, Boston Marathon. The exact details of this 5k race have not been confirmed yet.

Taking place in Cape Town, South Africa over Easter weekend, the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon is very well known for the Ultra race (56kms). One of the world’s most beautiful races takes place on a challenging route, with spectacular scenery, views of clear blue oceans, majestic mountains and passionate South African supporters.
The 21km race is a very popular option for those who want to run a shorter distance, this consists of fewer hills and in recent years the Half Marathon has grown in popularity and often sells out early.
On the Good Friday morning (19th April 2019) there is also the option for you to compete in either the 12km or 24km trail run that takes you through the forest above the University of Cape Town providing fascinating views of the peninsula.
