See Amsterdam from a different angle

Because regular photos don’t quite cut it….

@PaperBoyo  showcases destinations like never before, by creating captivating and clever photos with paper cut outs. With such a unique way to explore a city, it is no surprise that his photos have quickly become a huge hit, with an astonishing 124k followers on Instagram! His journey has taken him from London to various locations around Europe and worldwide.

With the 2016 Amsterdam Marathon taking pace this weekend what could be better than to explore this unique city which unique photos?! @PaperBoyo has been kind enough to let us share his photos and fun facts from his time in Amsterdam below. Enjoy!

Theres still mystery surrounding the night Dutch artist Van Gogh lost his ear, but some people think fellow painter Paul Gauguin was responsible for cutting it off during a heated argument and that Van Gogh took responsibility to protect Gauguin from persecution (because he admired him deeply). Or perhaps Van Gogh really did just have an accident with his razor blade. Whatever happened the two artists never saw each other again and Van Gogh checked himself into a mental asylum a few days later

This is Oscar (AKA the bubble guy). He can do some insane bubble art and spends his time entertaining the crowds near the ‘I Amsterdam’ letters. I don’t usually photograph people but managed to catch a cute moment on the left here

If you ever step inside the City Opera house in Amsterdam, turn left- you’ll see a violinist bursting out of the floor in the foyer. He represents the irrepressible Jewish community who were based in the area before WWII

This is the impressive glass ceiling of the Maritime Museum. On the aquatic theme- Amsterdam was originally a fishing village, it took its name from the river Amstel and the dam that was built in 1220 to avoid floods from the Zuidersee entering the islands.’

‘The phrase ‘Dutch courage’ comes from when the British navy fought for control of the oceans against Dutch ships. The Dutch were considered such fierce, fearless enemies that the Brits would often need a drink before battle to build their courage’

‘Anne Frank wrote most of her diary entries to ‘Kitty’, but no one really knows who Kitty was. It could have been Anne’s friend before the war Käthe Egyedi, but Käthe did not think the letters were meant for her. There is a character called Kitty in the book series ‘Joop ter Heul’, which Anne loved so she may have borrowed the name from there. Whatever the case, her diary went on to become a symbol of the tragedy of WWII and if you’re ever in Amsterdam I thoroughly recommend you visit Anne Frank’s House (but book online to save queuing for hours)’

‘In Tarantino’s films there’s always a reference to the Netherlands; In Pulp fiction Vincent and Jules discuss Amsterdam and smoke Dutch tobacco. In Kill Bill Uma Thurman’s character shares the name of the Royal Dutch Queen Beatrix. In Reservoir Dogs the opening theme is performed by Dutch band George Bakker Selection’

‘This is De Gooyer, the tallest wooden mill in the Netherlands. Apart from in this game of noughts and crosses, all over Amsterdam you’ll see ‘XXX’ (don’t be cheeky now). It’s actually from the Amsterdam coat of arms and either represents the cross that St Andrew was martyred on in the 1st century. Or it could symbolise the three kisses that Dutch people give when greeting.’

Amsterdam is looking pretty as a picture. The architecture is especially eye-catching; originally the locals were taxed on the amount of space their house took up on the street, which is why most of the houses are narrow but also very tall

‘The Floating flower market (as you’ve never seen it before). If you’re new to the Netherlands and you find yourself in the country on the first Monday of the month at midday- you may want to cover your ears. At that time there’s a test disaster siren (called a Waarschuwingsstelsel). Where ever you are in the country you’ll be able to hear it because there’s 4200 sirens.’
