HOW TO TRAIN FOR YOUR SPRING MARATHON DURING THE WINTER MONTHS: WITH OUR AMBASSADORS!
Following an edition of the Tour de France from the roadside is a rite of passage for cycling fans. But travelling all the way from Australia to watch every stage of the Tour within touching distance of the pro peloton is truly a trip of a lifetime. We sat down with our friends Gary and Rita aka the ‘Kangaroo Travellers’ to talk about their Tour de France adventure with Sports Tours.
Please tell us about yourselves and your love for traveling.
We are Gary and Rita, an Aussie couple that’s been together for 31 years. We began travelling a lot later in life. France was always a dream holiday, with an abundance of culture, art, and tempting cuisine. But watching the Tour de France race in the blissful French mountains seemed like a once in a lifetime experience.
Why was the Tour de France your trip of choice?
Our interest in the Tour de France began by following Cadel Evans and his win in 2011. Since then, we have watched the Tour each year, enduring numerous late nights, and early morning finishes. The breath-taking scenery and stunning towns and villages along the routes of the Tour captured our love of travel and cycling. We decided we needed to experience the Tour for ourselves.
What was your favourite memory from the trip to last year’s Tour de France?
Meeting Christian Prudhomme (General Director of the Tour de France) was the absolute pinnacle. We heard a French accent ask, “so what part of Australia are you from?” (This was due to Gary having an Aussie flag draped over his shoulders). Christian chatted to us for about 20 minutes. He was very appreciative that we had come from the opposite side of the world to watch and follow the entire three weeks of the Tour in Denmark and France. Over those three weeks, we experienced so many wonderful memories and emotions that will stay with us for a lifetime. It was everything we hoped for and more!
Can you describe the experience at the Tour de France with one of our VIP Fan Experiences, available at all 21 stages?
Standing against the fence on the Champs Elysees finish line lets you feel the rush of the riders as they passed by several times on the final stage, only metres away. Across from our position we could view the entire stage live on the big screen. This also gave us the opportunity to watch all the action and post-race presentations without missing a single second!
As a bonus, the VIP finish area opened a few hours earlier to promote the Tour de France Femmes race finish for stage one. We were thrilled to soak in the atmosphere, vibes and cheering while sipping champagne with friends and loved ones.
