The borough of Tameside is challenging towns across the North West to take on the Tour of Tameside and put them to the test in the Ultimate Town Team Challenge next month.
Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council and Marathon legend Dr Ron Hill MBE, who founded the original Tour of Tameside in the early 1980s, are backing the challenge for teams of runners from different towns to sign up to the 4 day running event.
The team with the fastest combined finishing time will receive £500 towards their chosen charity and will be crowned winners of the Ultimate Town Team Challenge.
The Tour of Tameside will welcome hundreds of runners from Tameside and beyond when it returns from Thursday 16th – Sunday 19th June 2016.
Tameside Council Chief Executive Steven Pleasant said:
“This four day running event across Tameside will provide numerous health and sporting benefits and also help to bring a great sense of community as everyone can get involved. There are no other sporting events like this in the UK, so it will really raise the profile of Tameside on a regional and national level as a destination for sport and leisure activities.”
Dr Ron Hill MBE added:
“The Tour of Tameside attracts hundreds of runners each year and it’s always great to see the community spirit with so many residents and businesses supporting the event. This year we want to extend this to other towns and invite runners from across the North West to see if they have what it takes to beat Tameside to the challenge!”
Runners who take on all four days will cover the distance of one and a half marathons, with each day covering different routes and types of terrain across a mixture of closed roads, trails and country routes.
Local organisations supporting the event include Kerry Foods, New Charter Homes, Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council and Active Tameside.
Charity partners include Willow Wood, The Anthony Seddon Fund and Believe and Achieve. Runners can also run in aid of their own chosen charity.
